みなさんお元気ですか？松阪・伊勢・津の英会話スクール、GESのPeniです。

今回は、みなさんに僕の子ども時代について少しお話したいと思います。私が小さい頃、オバラウという島のレブカという町に住んでいました。両親と二人の姉妹でそこに住んでいました。レブカはフィジーの以前の首都で、約１０００人しか住んでいない町です。町にはたくさんの植民地様式の小さな建物があります。レブカは現在世界遺産となっています。多くの人々は、ヨーロッパの移住者の末裔です。

私は小学校６年生までレブカに住み、フィジーで最古のレブカパブリックスクールに進学しました。近所の人々はみなこの学校に進学しました。私たちはみなとても良い友人であり、家族ぐるみのつきあいをしていました。

近所の子供たちはみな登下校をともにし、お互いの誕生日パーティーに行き、一緒にゲームをして遊びました。放課後は、男の子はビー玉遊びをし、女の子たちは、島の踊りや美人コンテストをしていました。一緒にはかくれんぼをしたり、パニというボールト缶を使ったゲームをしました。他には、ミッションヒルステップという階段を上り下りする競争をしたりしました。ここも世界遺産に登録されており、１９９の階段があります。

土曜日には、みんなビーチで遊び、石灰岩を集めたり、小さな魚やクラゲを捕まえたり、橋から海に飛び込んだり、カシカシというカニでレースをしたりしました。カシカシはかわいかったですが、やさしく扱わないと、私たちの手足をはさんできました。

日曜日には、父のボートで家族でクルーズに行き、ボートで岩礁に行きピクニックをしました、時々、遠くの海まで釣りに行ったりもしました。

子どもの頃の一番楽しかったのはレブカに住んでいた時でした。また、いつか訪ねたいと思います。

This time, I’d like to share a bit about my childhood.

When I was little, I lived in a town called Levuka, which is located on an island called Ovalau. I lived there with my parents and two sisters. Levuka is the old capital of Fiji and is a little town with roughly about a thousand people. It has many colonial-style small buildings and houses. Levuka is now a world heritage site. Many people in this town are descendants of the European settlers, who founded it.

I lived in Levuka until class six of primary school and I attended Levuka Public School, which is the oldest public school in Fiji. All the children in our neighborhood attended this school. We were all very good friends and our families were quite close.

The children in our neighborhood went to and returned from school together, went to each other’s birthday parties, and played games together. After school, the boys would play marbles and the girls would do their island dancing/ beauty competition. Together, we would play games that included Hide And Seek and Pani, a game using a ball and a stack of old cans.  We would also race up and down a place called Mission Hill Steps. It is also a world heritage site and has 199 steps. On Saturdays, we would all play on the beach, collecting limestone, catching little fish (and jellyfish) amongst the rocks, dive from a bridge into the sea, and have crab races using Kasikasi (Hermit crab). They were cute to watch, but they would occasionally pinch our hands and feet if we weren’t gentle with them. On Sundays, my family would go on a cruise on my father’s boat, have a boat picnic very near the reef and swim there, and sometimes go deep-sea fishing.

The best time of my childhood was growing up in Levuka. I’d like to go there again someday.
