みなさんお久しぶりです、元気にしてましたか？

僕が小中学校に通っていたころ、図書館から本を借りるだけでなく、クラスメイトや友達、近所の人たちと僕は、本をお互い交換しあっていました。学校の昼休みやにはみんな本を読んでましたし、家でも宿題や家事の手伝いが終わったら、夕食の前後に本を読んでいました。

イーニッド・ブライトンはイギリスの有名な作家で、彼女の本がみんな大好きでした。子供たちの冒険や子ども探偵のストーリーのthe Famous FiveやSecret Sevenシリーズが特に有名です。

Hardy Boysシリーズ the Nancy Drewシリーズもよく読んでいて、どちらの物語も１０代のアマチュア探偵が、謎解きをするお話です。これらのシリーズは何人かのゴーストライターが共同のペンネーム（Franklin W. Dixon and Carolyn Keene)で書いていました。

私たちは、新聞の連載漫画も好きでした。特にお気に入りだったのは、The Phantom（ファントム）という謎めいた、コスチュームを着た、犯罪者と戦うヒーローのお話です。Lee Falkの創り出したこのシリーズは漫画の単行本としても発売されましたが、僕は新聞で読むほうが好きでした。そのほうがドキドキするし、翌日までストーリーを知るのに待たなくてはならなかったからです。

これらの他に、学校の文学のクラスでは分析的な読書をしなくてはなりませんでした。とても難しかったですが、表現の潜在的な意味や作者の意図を理解できた時はとても充実したものでした。

たくさんの詩、演劇や小説を読みました。その中には有名なシャーロット・ブロントのジェーン・エアもありました。彼女は小説家で詩人でもありました。そのほかにもたくさんの演劇やソネット、シェイクスピアの悲劇も読みました。

It’s been a while. I hope you’re well.

When I was in primary and secondary school, my classmates, friends in my neighborhood, and I, used to exchange books to read, besides borrowing them from libraries. We would all read during our lunch break at school, and before or after dinner, once our homework and chores were completed.

Enid Blyton was a famous English author, whose books we loved reading. The notable ones are those in the Famous Five and Secret Seven series, with stories centering around children’s adventures and child detectives.

There were also the Hardy Boys series and the Nancy Drew series – the female counterpart. Stories in both series revolved around teenage amateur sleuths, who solved mystery cases. The books in the series were written by several ghostwriters, under collective pseudonyms – Franklin W. Dixon and Carolyn Keene.

Daily, we would also read comic strips in the newspapers. One that I quite liked reading was The Phantom, which centered around a mysterious, costumed crime-fighter. The Phantom series of stories, created by Lee Falk, were also sold as comic books, but I preferred reading it in the newspapers, as it was of more suspense, having to wait the next day for the story to unfold further.

Besides the above, at school we were required to do analytical reading in our literature classes. It was difficult, but fulfilling in that we could understand the underlying meaning of various expressions, and what were seemingly meant by various authors. We read many poems, plays, and novels. These included those, notably Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, who was an English novelist and poet, and various plays, sonnets, as well as tragedies by William Shakespeare.
